“I’m sure I’m not alone in this,” said Monticue, a Youngsville resident.

Monticue is also a “Swiftie” and attended Taylor Swift’s Era tour in which trading handmade friendship bracelets with other fans fostered a genuine sense of in-person community outside the online world and the chance to make new friends.

“The bracelets became this unifying thing. People would make them and trade them. Then there you are, talking to total strangers but being kind, exchanging bracelets, becoming friends,” said Monticue.

Monticue came up with an idea to bridge the division and create a safe space to discuss the issues: “Do crafts together. Give people a chance to share their hearts and ask questions without being yelled at or judged. Provide them with helpful resources. Have it somewhere beautiful and provide yummy snacks.”

“People in our communities are having a tough time putting food on the table, affording clothing for their families, and paying their rent; most of us are concerned about the cost of living. We have so much common ground,” said Monticue.

Friendship Bracelets and Politics will be on Saturday at the Brokenstraw Winery from 1 to 5 p.m. Entry is $10 for those over 21 and $5 for anyone under 21. Bracelet-making supplies, snacks, and a glass of wine (for 21+) are provided at the cost.

Monticue also said voter registration will be available at the event for anyone who is not yet registered.

“We all need safe spaces to talk about the things that matter to us,” said Monticue.
