A few years ago (before I installed a "No Soliciting" sign) I was approached by a salesman trying to sell me a home security system. He got to the end of his spiel and hit me with the price: $200 a month. Insane. The next day I picked up a Ring doorbell for less than half that and purchased a $5/month plan and have been happy ever since. You want to be happy — and protected and secure— too? Well, right now, you can pick up the fan-favorite Ring Video Doorbell for just $60 — that's 40% off!
Ring
With 1440p resolution, two-way audio and a lot of other useful features, this is the one video doorbell to rule them all. Even better? It's "a snap to set up," fans say.
The Ring doorbell is a tested and true product if ever there was one, with millions of these units sold in the past decade. It normally costs $100, so you're saving $40 — enough to buy another smart-home device (perhaps a couple of app-controlled light bulbs), a second Ring camera (more about that later), or a few months' head start on your RIng Protect Plan. This price is one of the lowest we've ever seen, so if you've been on the fence about getting a video doorbell, now is the time — before all your holiday deliveries start piling up!
Even being a tech guy, I was skeptical about getting one of these. I live in a safe neighborhood where I am really close to all of my neighbors and I am not bothered by people coming to the door too often. The reason I wound up purchasing a Ring Doorbell? It was cheaper than replacing my "dumb" doorbell, which had stopped working. Now I can't imagine being without it. I use the Ring every day for everything from vetting who comes to my house without having to open the door, to seeing what critters are hanging out on my porch in the middle of the night (so far: a few foxes, a coupla coyotes and a bobcat). When I'm out of town for work I can even say hi to my daughter when she comes home from school, thanks to the two-way talk feature.
I will admit to a gripe with my Ring: If someone is close to the camera I can't see them entirely. That's fixed with this version, which provides 66% more coverage thanks to a 1440p x 1440p head-to-toe video that'll not only pick up the entirety of whoever is at your door, but where they've put your packages.
The proprietary app is easy to use so you can keep track of all of your Ring devices in one spot, and installation could not be easier.
The previous version of the Ring doorbell received over 167,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, making it one of Amazon's top-selling products ever. This new version only has 625 ratings so far, but the vast majority of them are five-star raves.
Pros 👍
"Living in an apartment building and having packages stolen is frustrating. After I installed this, I do not have to worry too much about my packages because it hooks up to my Echo Show. I can see who is at the door and keep a much better eye on my deliveries," said one five-star fan. "The best thing is I can talk to people outside without having to open the door. Visitors can even record messages for you through the Ring Protect subscription."
"This camera replaced a five-year-old Ring doorbell that lost some picture quality, probably due to its southern sun exposure. This camera is heads and tails better than the old one," reported this shopper. "Setup was simple using the iPhone and the Ring app."
"I saw on Reddit that using a Ring doorbell to serve as a call bell was super helpful as they watched over their loved one," said one caring user. "It works like a dream!! I put the settings to only alert me if the button is pressed. Since the doorbell only has the one button, it was super easy for my loved one with dementia to work. Also, because it is Ring, it connected to my other devices with ease. Now, no matter where I am, I can receive the alerts as well as speak and watch my loved one in real time."
Cons 👎
"The only downside is you have to remove the whole camera to charge the battery, leaving you with no camera for a few hours unless you wire it to power," one shopper commented. "Other models have a removable battery that you can remove and charge. If you have a second battery to replace it with while charging, all the better." In any case, the aforementioned app lets you know when the battery is getting low so you won't find yourself in a blind bind when you're not at home.
"So far, the biggest problem was mounting it, "claimed this four-star reviewer. "The mounting bracket holes are not in the same spot as [the previous model]. So we drilled new holes. The mounting bracket has two hooks to hang it on top, then it’s supposed to snap in place on the bottom" They added: "We installed it on brick, and the bracket has to be perfectly flat for it to snap in properly. We ended up using washers and put a tool under the bottom to get it to finally snap into place."
