We all know that the afterparty is often better than the main event. And so it goes that afterparty jewellery, in the case of the post-Oscars soirées, is edgier than what's worn before. A couple of standouts this year: Yara Shahidi at the Vanity Fair party in a Cartier ear cuff, and Hailey Bieber and Camille Rowe at the same event, both in ear pieces by Ana Khouri.

There is something undeniably contemporary about a cuff — it's a fast-track jewel with a vibe that says, "Ordinary earring? No, thanks," while also removing the need for any other adornment. Big brands are fully aware of its appeal for younger customers: see Dior's pretty ribbon that loops up the lobe (above) or Pomellato's chunky chain crawler. But if you want to dabble, look at the multitude of independents who really let their creativity run — like Bibi van der Velden and her marine-inspired version with jellyfish carved from lavender quartz or Repossi's achingly cool black-gold cuff set with six pear-cut diamonds. Even better, for the latter you don't even need a piercing to wear it.
