A quick scroll through Instagram and you'll notice we’re not the only ones obsessed with oversized gold earrings right now. From geometric baubles to rippled studs that cover the entire earlobe; vintage-inspired (or often actually vintage) big, bold jewellery is absolutely everywhere.
The trend has maintained relevance off and on since the eighties – Princess Diana famously wore her trademark gold styles well into the nineties – but designer labels such as Bottega Veneta and Saint Laurent have led the charge in its most recent resurgence.
When Bottega Veneta’s ‘drop shape’ earrings made their debut on the AW23 catwalk, they sent the fashion pack into a frenzy. The gold-plated studs, which retail for a steep £860, spawned a long wait list and have since been worn by the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kendall Jenner and Dua Lipa.
The teardrop earrings have become a cult purchase, and there are now numerous dupes available on the high street from brands like COS, Anthropologie and M&S.
Other labels who’ve launched their own take on the 80s-inspired jewellery trend include Saint Laurent, Khaite and Valentino, from oversized discs (with clip fastenings for an even more retro spin) to sculptural styles and playful droplet pearl shapes.
If you're looking to join in but you don’t want to commit to the designer price tag, there are several demi-fine jewellers that have backed the revival, with big, bold and gold styles in the collections at YSSO, Anisa Sojka and Neima Row.
Plus, there are lots of high street options too. Mango’s jewellery offering includes so many stylish oversized designs, it was hard to just pick one. Meanwhile, Cos is starting off the Christmas party season with a very strong (and purse-friendly) earring collection. So keep scrolling to take your pick.
