A California woman almost ended up in the emergency room after leaving her earrings from Amazon in for too long, showing how dangerous it can be and raising questions about the potential health risks of silicone earring backs.
TikTok creator Amber Guttilla, 30, went viral when she shared her harrowing story with her 60,000 followers, receiving 7.5 million views on the video.
'I've had my ears pierced for 30 years and never knew this,' Amber captioned the viral clip, calling it a 'public service announcement' about 'jewelry cleaning' in her hashtags.
'This is a PSA to anybody who has earrings,' the Los Angeles-based creator warned, explaining it's best to avoid silicone backs, which can get stuck to the back of the ear due to oil and dirt.
Amber's TikTok commenters were split, as some wondered why she didn't change her backs more often, and others were shocked more people didn't sleep in their earrings.
Amber started the video by saying, 'You might want to know this because I did not know this, and it almost landed me in the hospital.'
The content creator then showed silicone earring backs and said they weren't meant to be worn long-term.
She explained that she decided to change her second piercing and swap them out for a stainless steel pair from Amazon.
Because her flat-backs were difficult to put in, she used a silicone back instead - however, after a month or two, she couldn't remove them.
She went to a piercing shop for help and wanted to pay them to remove her jewelry - the piercer said, 'Let me guess, it's one of those clear silicone backs.'
Amber learned from the piercer that the inexpensive silicone backs let in oil, grease from hair, sweat, and makeup, which can create 'a glue, like an adhesive,' so if you wear them for too long, it can 'fuse' to the earring.
The piercer warned that the last girl who came in and needed the silicone back removed was sent to the hospital 'to get them cut out of her ears.'
'It hadn't totally fused, but it was pretty challenging for him and a little bit painful, but honestly worth every penny,' Amber explained about the ordeal.
'Those little clear fasteners are really not meant to be used in your earrings for more than like a night or two, so don't leave them on too long. Otherwise, those just may become your new permanent earrings,' Amber advised - and while permanent jewelry is popular now, it's unlikely people are looking for permanent earring backs.
Commenters were in an uproar, with many asking, 'Do y'all not clean your ears?' and 'Y'all not washing behind y'all ears???'
'How does anyone sleep in earrings? They stab your head,' a woman wondered.
Many people pointed out that the silicone earring backs were only meant to hold the earrings to the packaging, and weren't meant to actually be used.
Others advised, 'You need to be removing your jewelry and cleaning the piercings regularly.'
However, there were plenty of people who admitted to sleeping in their earrings regularly.
One person wrote, 'People remove their earrings EVERY NIGHT?? HELLO? How?? Bro that's so much work what.'
Some were surprised, saying, 'This comment section is how I found out most people don't sleep in their earrings?' and 'Wait…who takes their earrings off at night??? I'm part of the minority?'
One summed it up by writing, 'Based on these comments it feels 50/50.'
On Reddit, users have dealt with similar issues, saying their plastic earring backs have gotten stuck over time, asking for help on how to remove them without a pricey doctor's visit.
Users urged them to use nail clippers to cut them off, which worked for Reddit users - however, it would also work to clean the ear with alcohol pads, as well as earrings, and to make sure to remove the earrings regularly and wash around the ear.
